Richard Flaherty (Deceased)

Pioneers of Yesterday 2014

If it weren’t for the dreams of some of the owners of bowling lanes, there would not be bowling as there is today and has been for the past 75 years.

PC Flaherty started the Flaherty bowling center in 1938 on Raymond and University with just 6 lanes.  In 1949 he moved to Snelling and Larpenteur where he installed 12 lanes in the basement of the shopping center.  In 1959 PC retired and Richard took over the operation of Flaherty’s.  Under Richard’s great business knowledge, seeing that 12 lanes were getting too small, they opened up a new center in Arden Hills in 1963 with 24 lanes and a full kitchen and bar.  The next 15 years were busy years; Richard spent time from open to close watching the business grow.  In 1978, Flaherty’s added 12 additional lanes to the current location to accommodate the larger number of bowlers.

Over the years, Flaherty’s has built a great youth bowling program.  Some of the great names that have come out of this program are: Amanda Burgoyne Vermilyea, Erik Vermilyea, Luke Voaklander, Carl Poelzer.  Richard was very supportive to help the youth program grow to 2 shifts on Saturdays and a Sunday Adult/Youth  league

He was instrumental in hosting many of the local and state tournaments.  Some of the tournaments Flaherty’s hosted are: Women’s State, St Paul Senior City, Open and Mixed Team Challenge, St Paul Youth City Championship.

Richard was an avid bowler bowling leagues and tournaments.  He has a 300 game to his credit.  But spent more time running the business to make sure the leaguer bowlers and the everyday bowler would have a great time while at Flaherty’s.

He retired from day-to-day operations in 1997.  If you visit Flahery’s Arden Bowl, you can still see the ground work that Richard put in to the business today.  Friendly atmosphere, great service, and bowling for young and all

Owner of The Metro Bowler.  The Metro Bowler has been involved with “all aspects” of bowling in St. Paul (in addition to the rest of Minnesota) since the 1975-76 bowling season.  This newspaper has helped promote most bowling activities including local, city, state and national bowling tournaments since 1975.  The Metro Bowler has been an active partner in the Bowlers Recognition Dinner, fundraising activities for two ABC Presidential inaugural galas (Bovitz and Tessman), St. Paul Masters, St. Paul Mixed Tournaments, St. Paul Senior Tournaments, and the men’s and women’s St. Paul “City” Tournaments.  This newspaper has given the St. Paul Bowling Associations and proprietors weekly access to its members and has never missed a deadline.
In the twenty-six years since its inception, over 850 issues have reached the bowlers of St. Paul providing its readers with the information they seek.  The Metro Bowler has given recognition to tens of thousands of St. Paul men, women, juniors and seniors for high games, high series and other noteworthy accomplishments on the lanes.  The print used to cover the issues in the first twenty-six years if stacked and put into the space of a regulation size basketball court (46 ft. x 85 ft.), would reach almost 19 feet high or over 1.5 stories!  Became a staff member of The Metro Bowler the second year of its existence.  Since then, she has been a typesetter, done much of the writing, editing, key lining, selling, and delivery of the newspaper.  A member of the Minneapolis Women’s Hall of Fame in the Superior Performance category.  She is currently owner of West Side Lanes.

Bob’s bowling career began in 1938 when he was employed as a pinsetter in Peshtigo, WI.   Peshtigo’s claim to fame is that it completely burned down at the same time as the Chicago Fire and 1400 people died.  O’Leary’s cow had more paper presence so it never even got into the paper.  Bob learned to bowl by setting up pins, bowling and then setting up the pins again.  Through the years he has bowled on multiple leagues and has also ran a bowling center in Menomonee Michigan for a season.  His high game was a 296 bowled in Rettke’s Center in Marinette, WI.  His highest season’s average was a 188.  Bob’s greatest contribution to the game of bowling has been as an originator and coach for the junior bowling program at Hero’s (originally Park Grove Lanes).  The program was established in 1959 and is active today with an average of 350-400 junior bowlers each season.  An Adult-Junior Tournament at Hero’s Lanes has been named for Bob in his honor for all the effort expended and a winner is posted each year. Bob has coached one to two leagues the entire 38 years he was associated with its operation.  He was secretary for the program from 1959 through 1980.  He coordinated the Junior Bowling Banquet each year.  Bob has introduced many young people to the game and has developed a life long love of it for many young bowlers.  He was also active in other parts of the Community: delivering Meals on Wheels, Chapter President for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees from 1984-90 and State President for the same organization from 1990 to 1998.
